The Astromical Society of Japan announced Naoshi Sugiyama, IPMU Principal Investigator and professor of Nagoya University, as a recipient of the Hayashi Chushiro Prize.

Sugiyama's award is for his contribution to theoretical study of Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMB). He has numerically solved the density and temperature fluctuations in the expanding hot Big Bang universe, and obtained the precise prediction of the CMB temperature fluctuations. This is a pioneering work in the field of high precision cosmology, which makes the evaluation of cosmological models possible using the experimental results of temperature fluctuations. In particular, his work has been highly regarded for showing that a limit can be set on the curvature of the universe. He clarified the fundamental process which generates the CMB temperature fluctuations, and the dependence of the temperature fluctiations on cosmological parameters such as curvature of the universe, matter density, and matter composition.
