For their risk management work in normalizing harassment prevention education, a group of Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) staff, represented by Project Specialist Rieko Tamura, has been awarded the 2017 University of Tokyo President's Award for Business Transformation.

This award is given out annually by the university to recognize administrative staff and individual departments that have developed ideas with a significant impact on reforming the university. More than 20 projects were considered this year.

“This business transformation was possible, not only thanks to the Kavli IPMU staff member and researchers, but also thanks to the professional advice from the University Harassment Counseling Center, and the prize money we received from our award last year. This experience has made me realize that alone, our capacity to make change is limited. But together, we are capable of new innovations,” said Tamura.

The Kavli IPMU team was commended for developing a harassment education video and online quiz in English. The team and their families (and one cat) developed the education video’s storyboard, script, props, and starred in the video itself.

The video was made for researchers within the institute, half of who are from overseas, and was also uploaded to the university’s E-learning system to allow researchers on overseas trips to take part in university activities. Moreover, the video and quiz also became accessible to all University of Tokyo researchers with access to the university portal site.

The Kavli IPMU team was one of 7 projects to be commended during the award ceremony on December 15 at the Yasuda auditorium in Hongo Campus. Two projects were awarded the President’s Award, two the Executive Vice President’s Award, and three the Special Award.
