Yukinobu Toda, a project associate professor at Kavli IPMU, has been selected to share the 11th JSPS Prize. The purpose of the JSPS Prize is to recognize and support young scientists who have performed significant work in humanities, social science, or natural science. The candidate must be under 45 years of age. The award ceremony will be held on February 24, 2015 at the Japan Academy.
Toda was honored for his research on “the derived category of coherent sheaves and curve counting invariants”. Today, researchers around the world not only in mathematics but also physics are interested in three-dimensional Calabi–Yau manifolds. Using an abstract concept, the derived category of coherent sheaves, Toda successfully proved the conjectures for some regularities among the numbers of curves on a three-dimensional Calabi–Yau manifold when counted. This achievement provides a major breakthrough in the research of Calabi–Yau manifolds, and applies not only special Calabi–Yau manifolds but also general Calabi–Yau manifolds.
In March 2014, Toda was selected as the recipient of the 2014 Spring Prize of the Mathematical Society of Japan (MSJ) due to his outstanding contributions to the "study of derived categories of algebraic varieties".
