The University of Tokyo Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU, WPI)
Toshiyuki Kobayashi, The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences Professor and Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU, WPI) Senior Fellow, has been named the next Israel Gelfand Chair in Mathematics by the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in France.
IHES was established in 1958 as an advanced institute in mathematics, theoretical physics and related sciences. Widely known as a world leader in mathematics, of the 14 permanent professors in mathematics recruited since its creation, 9 have received the Fields Medal. The Israel Gelfand Chair was established in 2014 in honor of Israel Gelfand, who is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century. The position symbolizes scientific excellence and the sharing of knowledge, which are two of the institute’s fundamental values.
"I am honored to be appointed to the Gelfand Chair at IHES. Israel Gelfand is one of the mathematicians I admire most, and his work has been a source of inspiration to me since my early studies. IHES brings together many outstanding researchers whose work is closely connected with my own, including a long-term collaborator. I look forward to visiting the institute regularly and exploring new avenues of research with colleagues there,” said Kobayashi.
