Ⅳ. JSPS International Fellowships for Research in Japan

0.  Before You Start

You must make an application online via the JSPS Electronic Application System. Please note that the first thing you must do is to share the application forms with the International Relations Team BEFORE you complete the application. We will review the forms beforehand to check out if they include all the required information and give you some advice when necessary. Please feel free to ask us if you need any help, including language problems.

Please also note that applicants must have an ID and PW for the application system (you cannot use the one for KAKENHI applications). Please let us know when you need one.

 

1. Overview

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) carries out programs to support research activities of international researchers while advancing science and promoting internationalization in Japan.

 

[Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan]

To promote international scientific cooperation, JSPS encourages highly qualified researchers from abroad to come to and conduct joint research activities with colleagues at Japanese universities and research institutes.

 

[Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan]

JSPS carries out programs that provide overseas researchers who have an excellent record of research achievements with an opportunity to conduct collaborative research, discussions, and opinion exchanges with researchers in Japan.

Please note that these programs are quite competitive. Even If your application unfortunately fails to pass the selection, it is still possible to invite a researcher by using your own funds. In that case, however, Kavli IPMU can NOT give any special consideration to the plan.

[Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan]

Summer Program

This program provides opportunities for young pre- and post-doctoral researchers from North America and Europe (France, Germany, Canada, Sweden) to receive an orientation on Japanese culture and research systems and to pursue research under the guidance of host researchers at Japanese universities or other research institutions.

2 months during the summer

Strategic Program

This program is designed to strategically invite excellent researchers with high future potential from *selected countries to Japan for the purpose of building collaborative research relationships with Japanese colleagues. *Switzerland for this year

2 to 12 months

Short-term Program

This program provides PhD students/researchers in the Europe and North America with opportunities to conduct collaborative research under the guidance of their hosts at Japanese universities or other research institutions. A person who has never engaged in research in Japan would be most preferable.

1 to 12 months

Standard Program

This program provides an opportunity to conduct collaborative research for young overseas researchers under the guidance of their hosts at Japanese universities or other research institutions.

12 to 24 months

JSPS provides all the fellows with airfare (a round-trip ticket), overseas travel insurance, maintenance allowances (the amount of which vary among programs or researchers’ status).

 

[Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan]

This program is designed to invite overseas researchers with excellent records of research achievements to collaborate with Japanese colleagues in carrying out research through (relatively) long-term visits.

2 to 10 months

Short-term

This program is designed to invite overseas researchers with excellent records of research achievements for short-term visits to Japan and provide them opportunities for discussions, opinion exchanges, lectures and other activities.

14 to 60 days

JSPS provides all the fellows with airfare (a round-trip ticket), overseas travel insurance, maintenance allowances (the amount of which vary among programs or researchers’ status).
