1. Start-up Fund (=SU Fund)

Kavli IPMU provides faculty members and postdocs with research fund (Start-up Fund).  The amount of SU Fund is stated in your offer letter issued by our Director.  

On the first day of the appointment, the amount of SU Fund committed in your offer letter is provided.

After that, in case you could not get the KAKENHI grant (=Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research),  the additional SU Fund stated in your offer letter will be given on coming April 1.It will be the same handling of the third fiscal year as well.

Researchers can bring SU Fund which they did not spend in a fiscal year to the next fiscal year.

Please note that if your KAKENHI project is adopted after receiving the the additional SU Fund on April 1, the remaining unused amount received on April  will be back to IPMU.

2. External Research Grant

All Kavli IPMU faculty members and postdocs are encouraged to obtain external research grants. One of the most popular research fund in Japan is Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research, which is run by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).  Refer to EXTERNAL RESEARCH GRANT for more details.

When you personally receive a grant from a foundation etc., please immediately contact the Kavli IPMU Administration Office.  

The University of Tokyo prohibits researchers from managing their own grants and using the grants as their personal money within the university.

3. Inquiry on Current Amount of Research Fund

When you are not sure how much of your research fund is left at the moment, please contact finance@ipmu.jp.  

(Attention) Pay special attention to items purchased using your research grants when you take them off our institution
