Hitoshi Murayama, Professor at the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU, WPI), has been named the incoming Vice Chair of the Division of Particles and Fields (DPF) under the American Physical Society, it was announced by the DPF executive committee.

The American Physical Society (APS) is a non-profit organization established in 1899 for professionals in physics and related fields, to advance and diffuse physics knowledge. Today it is made up of about 50,000 members with 17 divisions for each subfield, including the DPF. The APS also publishes more than a dozen scientific journals including Physical Review. The DPF was established in 1967, and is dedicated to studying fundamental particles and fields, their structure, their interactions and interrelationships, the design and development of high energy accelerators, and the design and development of instrumentation techniques for high energy physics. The DPF has about 5000 members today.
The Vice Chair position is elected by members of the DPF to serve on the DPF Executive Committee. It is a four-year role where Murayama will begin as Vice Chair, then over the subsequent years become Chair-Elect, Chair in 2027, and Past Chair.

“I’m honored to be elected to the chair line of Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society (APS) based on open ballots by division members. I will be representing the entire field of particle physics in APS which has memberships not just among American institutions but internationally. The leadership of APS has been working relentlessly to promote physics in the eyes of US government, Congress, research institutions and universities, and public at large. I will work with the APS leadership and Executive Committee members to specifically support particle physics. In particular, I will keep working on implementing the long-term vision in the P5 report I chaired recently working with funding agencies,” said Murayama.

As Chair from 2027, Murayama’s responsibility will be to oversee operations of the Division, and preside at all meetings of the Executive Committee and Business Sessions of the DPF at which the Chair’s attendance is possible.

Murayama will begin his position as Vice Chair on January 1, 2025.
