Hitoshi Murayama, a Principal Investigator at the University of Tokyo’s Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU), has been given the new title of University Professor, the University of Tokyo announced today.

Murayama is one of four academics to be given this title, which will take effect from April 1. The university has established this new title to recognize important individuals within the institution who are making significant contributions to his or her academic field internationally, and who are continuing to lead research activities that will contribute to further developments in their field in the future.

“I am very honored to have been selected as a University Professor at the University of Tokyo. In October last year, I returned to UC Berkeley after finishing my time as director of the Kavli IPMU. However, now that I have been given this title, I look forward to doing more research with my colleagues at Kavli IPMU, and making the best of both of my positions to further improve the university’s status internationally,” said Murayama.
