Project Professor Naoki Yoshida from The Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU, WPI), The University of Tokyo, has been named the recipient of this year’s Philipp Franz von Siebold Award.

“The research I have done through the Kavli IPMU up to today has included international collaborations with many researchers from around the world. I am very grateful that this award has not only recognized my work in astrophysics, but has also recognized the collaborations I have taken part in between Germany and Japan,” said Yoshida.

The Philipp Franz von Siebold Award was established in 1978 by Walter Scheel, the Federal President of Germany at the time, and recognizes the outstanding contributions by a Japanese researcher or academic in improving the mutual understanding of culture and society in Germany and Japan. It honors researchers from all disciplines, and in addition to a 60,000 Euro monetary prize, the award allows the recipient to receive support to carry out collaborative research in Germany for up to a year.

Yoshida has been honored for his work in astrophysics, which has been recognized by the international research community. He also spent several years doing research in Germany, including carrying out his PhD studies at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, and receiving his PhD in Astronomy from the University of Munich. He has since continued to collaborate with researchers in Germany, expanding the science community between the two countries.

An award ceremony will be held at the Bellevue Palace during the Humboldt Foundation’s annual meeting in June, where Yoshida will be presented the award by the Federal President of Germany.
