Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU)
On August 2, 2020, the Kavli IPMU and the Japan Association of Communication for Science and Technology (JACST) will present an online talk, titled “Fundamental Talks, Vol. 01: Mathematics—how to interact with objects in a non-everyday manner.” Originally scheduled for February as a talk session with a philosopher and an artist, the event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The session will be presented by Principal Investigator and Professor at Kavli IPMU Yukinobu Toda.
Fundamental Talks is to be a 10-part series of seminars. Researchers from cutting-edge science, social sciences and contemporary art will be speakers for the events. Meanwhile, a meet up event mainly for scientists and artists, called “Fundamentals Bazaar,” is scheduled to be held in June 2021.

Yukinobu Toda (Principal Investigator and Professor, Kavli IPMU)
After receiving a doctoral degree from the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, the University of Tokyo,Yukinobu Toda became an assistant professor at Kavli IPMU from January 2008. After working as a specially appointed associate professor and associate professor, Toda has been a principal investigator since April 2017. Since July of the same year, he has been a professor (concurrently serving as the principal investigator). Toda received the 2012 Geometry Prize, the 2014 Spring Prize of the Mathematical Society of Japan, and the 11th JSPS Prize of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Award (JSPS). He specializes in algebraic geometry.

Theme
Mathematics—how to interact with objects in a non-everyday manner
Mathematics and art seem to represent and treat objects in a way that differs greatly from everyday life. Both subjects deal with objects in a strict and rigorous manner. By contrast, the way we interact with objects in daily life seems to be somewhat lacking. To find out how to see objects from a mathematical point-of-view, ask a mathematician and learn from their real life experiences.
