The award recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the Society.
Haruyama has served the cryogenics community for many years, including holding positions such as Chair of the Cryogenic Society of Japan, Chair and Secretary General of the International Cryogenic Engineering Committee, and Asian Editor of the international journal Cryogenics.
His numerous contributions include the development pulse tube cryocoolers for large-scale liquid xenon particle detector searching for rare particle decays and dark matter searches, and cryocoolers for a gravitational wave detection, have been used by researchers and experiments around the world, leading to this recognition.
An award ceremony was held on May 29 during the Cryogenics and Superconductivity Society of Japan spring meeting from May 28 to 30.
