Surhud More, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) Professor and The University of Tokyo Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU, WPI) Visiting Senior Scientist, has received the 2025 Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar, India's National Science Awards, it was announced by the Government of India.
Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar was established in 2024 to recognize and promote groundbreaking research and inspire achievements by practitioners in diverse fields of science, technology, and technology-led innovation.
Awards are given out across 13 domains: Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics & Computer Science, Earth Science, Medicine, Engineering Sciences, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Technology & Innovation, Atomic Energy, Space Science and Technology, and other allied fields.
The award is also given out under four categories including recognition of lifetime achievements, distinguished achievements, young researchers under 45 who have made significant contributions, and to teams of researchers who have made exceptional contributions to science and technology.
More has received the Vigyan Yuva (Young Scientist) Shantiswarup Bhatnagar Prize for his contributions to Physics.
"I would like to very much share the credit for this award with the students, postdocs, and colleagues I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with over the years, many of them from Kavli IPMU. The research work with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey has been and continues to be a wonderful experience. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Kavli IPMU for the generous support I’ve received throughout my time in Japan and later as a Visiting scientist. I greatly value my connection with Kavli IPMU," said More.
More started as a Project Researcher at Kavli IPMU in 2012, before becoming an Associate Professor in 2018. The same year he moved to IUCAA, where he currently continues research on cosmology and the formation and evolution of galaxies, both observationally and theoretically. He is a member of Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey as well as the upcoming Vera Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time project, which aims to map out dark matter in the Universe and understand dark energy.
An award ceremony was held on 23 December, hosted by the President of India Droupadi Murmu.
